The Human Side of Engineering – Why Australia’s Skills Future Depends on Trades and Manufacturing

By Steve Francis, Managing Director, JB Specialised Engineering

When people talk about engineering, the conversation often focuses on machinery, technology, equipment and infrastructure.

Those things are important.

But after decades working in manufacturing and engineering, I’ve come to believe that the most important part of engineering isn’t the equipment.

It’s the people.

Every project, every innovation and every piece of critical infrastructure ultimately depends on skilled individuals who understand how to design, build, repair and improve the systems our communities rely upon.

Without those people, nothing gets built. Nothing gets maintained. Nothing improves.

That is why I believe one of the most important challenges facing Australia today is developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople and manufacturing professionals.

For many years, there has been a strong cultural message that success is primarily achieved through university pathways.

While university education is enormously valuable, I believe Australia has unintentionally undervalued the importance of skilled trades and manufacturing careers.

As a result, many young people are never exposed to the opportunities that exist within engineering and fabrication.

That is a problem.

Because the reality is that Australia desperately needs skilled tradespeople.

We need boilermakers. We need welders. We need fabricators. We need machinists. We need fitters. We need industrial electricians. We need maintenance specialists. We need manufacturing professionals who can solve problems, build solutions and support critical infrastructure across the country.

These are not secondary career options.

They are highly skilled professions that require intelligence, technical expertise, discipline and craftsmanship.

Many of these careers offer outstanding long-term opportunities, strong earning potential and the satisfaction of creating something tangible and meaningful.

Unfortunately, many young people never hear that message.

Too often, trade careers are discussed as alternatives rather than aspirations.

I believe that needs to change.

At JBSE, we see firsthand how valuable skilled tradespeople are.

We also understand that these skills do not develop by accident. They require investment. They require mentorship. They require opportunities.

That is why bringing apprentices and work placement students into our business is something we care deeply about.

We don’t see apprenticeships as simply filling future workforce requirements.

We see them as an investment in Australia’s industrial future.

Every apprentice who develops confidence in their trade is helping preserve critical skills that industry depends upon. Every experienced tradesperson who shares their knowledge is helping build capability for the next generation. Every work placement student who discovers a passion for manufacturing is helping strengthen Australia’s future engineering workforce.

This transfer of knowledge is incredibly important.

Many of the most valuable lessons in manufacturing cannot be learned from textbooks. They are learned through experience. They are learned by working alongside experienced tradespeople. They are learned by solving real problems in real environments. They are learned by understanding not just how something is built, but why it is built that way.

This knowledge is one of Australia’s most valuable industrial assets.

Yet much of it exists in the minds of experienced workers who are approaching retirement.

If we do not actively create pathways for younger people to enter the industry, there is a genuine risk that decades of practical expertise will be lost.

That loss would affect far more than individual businesses. It would impact Australia’s manufacturing capability, industrial resilience and economic productivity.

The future of Australian manufacturing depends on people. The future of critical infrastructure depends on people. The future of engineering depends on people.

That is why schools, industry groups, businesses and training organisations must work together more closely.

We need to provide greater exposure to manufacturing environments. We need to showcase modern engineering careers. We need to celebrate skilled trades as respected professions. We need to create more opportunities for young people to experience hands-on work and understand where these careers can lead.

Most importantly, we need to restore pride in making things.

Australia has a long history of innovation, manufacturing and engineering excellence.

Those achievements were built by skilled individuals who took pride in their work and understood the value of craftsmanship.

That same spirit still exists today.

I see it every day in workshops, fabrication facilities, maintenance shutdowns and project sites across the country. I see it in apprentices learning their trade. I see it in experienced fabricators mentoring younger workers. I see it in teams solving complex engineering challenges together.

These people are the backbone of Australian industry.

Their work often happens behind the scenes. Yet the infrastructure, facilities and services we rely upon every day would not exist without them.

As an industry, we have a responsibility to support the next generation.

Not simply because we need workers. But because we need skilled professionals who will continue building, maintaining and improving Australia’s industrial future.

The future of manufacturing is not just about technology.

It is about people.

And if we continue investing in those people, Australia’s engineering future will remain very strong indeed.
